民主進入「後事實」的時代，在網路上事實變得支離破碎。狄波頓指出，當前確實如此，但自古以來總是有人試圖用直覺和熱情來掩蓋理性。
狄波頓說，「人民像是著了魔，被扭曲的烏托邦吸引。這在英國從未發生過，而現在美國的川普是一樣的現象。當代社會進入遺忘、退化的新形式。社會忘了實際上，財富、和平和智慧是多麼脆弱，對眼前的一切棄之如敝屣，但無法解決問題。」

對於支持脫歐的選民，狄波頓並不感到憤怒，令他生氣的是前倫敦市長強生（Boris Johnson）、英國獨立黨（UKIP）主席法拉吉（Nigel Farage）等鼓吹脫歐的政治人物。
要遏止民粹式的語言，狄波頓認為，「唯一的方法是公民和媒體必須有智慧，用事實和耐心一一檢視發言。」

但在民主國家必須尊重言論自由，狄波頓說，「即使是像法拉吉這樣的江湖術士，也不能剝奪他的權利。」
